Get your blood pumping, sweat together while apart, connect to our ancestors, and experience the joy of dancing through the rhythmic beat of the drums. This intergenerational Afro-Colombian dance class offers a mix of rhythms and movements influenced by the diaspora and migration of Africans in the Pacific and Caribbean regions of Colombia.

From the elegant slow and ritualistic gestures of Cumbia, Bullerengue and Currulao, and the fast, free and frenetic moves of Mapalé and Garabato, to dances evolving from these traditions like Champeta and Merecumbé, performed popularly at Carnaval and other parades, LEIMAY AFRO-COLOMBIAN MOVES FOR ALL takes us through a cultural journey reclaiming the excitement and pleasure of being in our bodies while creating a connection with others despite physical distance and current isolation.

Join us for this 7-week class cycle online from your home anywhere in the world, or Onsite at Marsha P Johnson State Park in Brooklyn near our home studio.

Each cycle of LEIMAY classes will have an Encore class in which 100% of proceeds go to support various social justice causes. Organizations supported in the past have included: NAACP, Black Visions Collective, Brave Space Alliance, The Okra Project, and Homeless Black Trans Women Fund.

Please note that you must register below and pay IN ADVANCE for each session. The LEIMAY AFRO-COLOMBIAN MOVES FOR ALL Online class will be hosted on the Zoom platform. Zoom is accessible from your phone, tablet or computer. LEIMAY has limited spots available for Onsite participants at the Marsha P. Johnson State Park. Please register 48 hours in advance if you plan to attend the class Onsite. Additionally to ensure the health of all, you must adhere to strict physical distancing, mask wearing, screening, and tracing protocols. About Ricardo:

Ricardo is a dancer, choreographer and Contemporary Dance teacher with training in Afro Contemporary Dance and Traditional Afro Colombian Dance. Ricardo Bustamante began his dance education in 1997 studying Traditional Afro Colombian Dance with Wilfran Barrios, director of Atabaques in Cartagena, Colombia. In 1999, he began his training in Contemporary Dance at El Colegio del Cuerpo with Álvaro Restrepo and Marie France Delieuvin. Bustamante later received his undergraduate degree in Basic Dance Education from the University of Antioquia. After several years dancing professionally for La Compañía Cuerpo de Indias (professional company of El Colegio del Cuerpo), Bustamante went on to serve as the company's sub director from 2014 to 2019. During his professional career, he has performed the complete repertory of La Compañía Cuerpo de Indias in various national and international festivals; co-choreographed Flowers for Kazuo Ohno together with Álvaro Restrepo y Marie France Deliuvin, a contemporary dance performance that has seen international success; and in 2018 Bustamante was invited by the CPI Residency Program to commission new work for the SIDance Festival in Seoul, South Korea. Bustamante recently moved to New York City.
